a pub session, a heartbreaking song – and an unexpected guest.
within a traditional music session, traditional irish dance has always
enjoyed a symbiotic relationship in its kinetic and frenetic energy. all elements fuse together creating an order with clear structure. but what is the relationship of a contemporary irish dancer with the
formality of this relationship? what is she allowed dance to this music? in unsung we follow a girl, a contemporary dancer, into the heart of a traditional sean nos session. we watch as she is overcome
by the floating music of the “slow airs”, a music where there is no
evidence of any traditional dance relationship. we do not dance to
'slow airs'… until unsung. breaking this formality, and treating it as
a normal occurrence, speaks volumes.
